It is no longer news that the Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU) has over they years been engaged in constant agitation with the Federal Ministry of Health over a number of issues.

Last year the union embarked on an indefinite strike that lasted about 6weeks. The strike was suspended due to intervention by National Industrial Court of Nigeria and the referral of the issues on discussion to the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Center of the court. After months of sitting the ADR came to a conclusion without resolving one of the cardinal issues raised, that of CONHESS adjustment.

Equally so, despite the NICN pronouncement that status quo ante be maintained and that no one will do anything contrary to jeopardize the peace of the Hospitals under the Federal Ministry of Health, the ministry went ahead to implement a draconian decree of the military era, of “No work, no pay”.

JOHESU views this as an act of deliberate provocation to its members which is aimed at denying them of their rights to be involve in labour and trade dispute in the future. This is more so considering the ministries delay tactics ploy during negotiations and at the ADR.

On the 4th of February 2019 the Union staged a protest at the Federal Ministry of Health Abuja. The protest was attended by the president of Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) which is the biggest labour center and also with Trade Union Congress (TUC). The centers all called on the ministry to act fast or face a likely occupation of the ministry.

The current protest/rallies are geared towards getting the Minister of health and his labour counterpart to act fast on the issues on ground as is required by law. This is to avoid industrial action.

The rallies/protest are held simultaneously across the nation in all Federal health institutions/tertiary hospitals
